 | The Episcopal Parents’ Guild is an integral part of our community, organizing and overseeing most volunteer work at the school. All parents and guardians of students attending Episcopal High School are members of the Parents’ Guild.
Volunteers assist in all areas of the school. While volunteering, parents have the opportunity to interact with other parents, make new friends, and connect with the entire school community as they share the Episcopal experience with their children. Volunteer opportunities are varied, ranging from small projects of less than an hour's time with a few volunteers to school-wide events utilizing the amazing talents of many.

 Parent-to-Parent Book Study Valuable
by reynoldsn Episcopal parents gather on Tuesday mornings to participate in a six-week parent-to-parent book study called 'Lessons Learned'.
These sessions, which are focused on raising healthy, responsible children, allow an opportunity for parents to meet and have important discussions on key topics surrounding their child and the society in which we live.
During the morning study session, parents watch a video then complete workbook pages followed by in-depth discussions. Topics of study include awareness of your child's environment, the power of the toxic culture on children, signs and symptoms of a healthy child and an unhealthy child, the difference between a child and an adult, eleven ways a parent could raise a toxic child, never trust the Internet, traps parents can avoid, and drugs and alcohol information.
The parent education book study, designed by The Passage Group, is facilitated by Mary Rotenberg, Parents' Guild Website/Communications coordinator. Episcopal has offered this program for parents for over 8 years. This program will also be offered in the fall of 2012. If you are interested in participating in a “Parent to Parent” group in the upcoming Fall, please email Mary Rotenberg at mrotten@cox.net. |
Friday Knight Fais Do-Do 2012 Entertaining
by reynoldsn The Episcopal community gathered on the school's campus to enjoy a Karnival Knight evening 'rowing' down Bayou de La Woodland Ridge on Friday, March 30.
This year's event themed "Fais Do-Do" proved to be a swamptacular gathering filled with great food and fun activities for all ages. Along with traditional attractions, the Karnival featured new amusements such as a giant slide, a mechanical bull, and a human hamster ball. Students enjoyed space walks, fishing and dunking booths, Sweet Shop treats and much, much more.
The event included live music by Upper School students, who played popular Cajun tunes. Adding to the Cajun-spirit of the event were the traditional favorites of hamburgers, pretzels, popcorn, boiled crawfish, snow cones, pulled pork sandwiches and sausage po’boys as well as a fantastic culinary creation, an authentic cochon de lait, prepared by Chef Pat Mahon, the EHS Director of Nutritional Services.
A special thanks to Deanne Frazier and Lisa Tucker, Karnival Knight Co-Chairs and the EHS Parents Guild for another spectacularly successful event.

 To Nicaragua with Love
by EHS Communications
Nicaraguan students express their thanks with smiles for the many uniforms their schools received in September of this year.
After the June Used Uniform Sale, more than 20 boxes of clothing were stored by Janel Chapman until shipment to Nicaragua could be arranged in August. All the warm weather items were packed in three huge boxes picked up in early August. A total of 729 pounds of uniforms were sent to needy children at three Nicaraguan schools. Esmarelda Rivas, resident of Baton Rouge, arranged the shipment of the uniforms to her sister, Marie Rivas, in Empalme San Benito, Nicaragua, who separated the uniforms into over 1,000 individual bags and distributed them to needy families. The three Nicaraguan schools which received the items require blue shorts and white shirts, so EHS uniforms were a perfect match. Marie Rivas indicated that there were enough small jumpers for every girl in a Pre-K/elementary school; therefore, the school changed the uniform policy to include the plaid jumpers.
Marie also mentioned the extreme poverty in Empalmo San Benito and everything sent was very much appreciated. She indicated that the families were extremely grateful and thanked all the individuals in Baton Rouge for their generous gifts of clothing. Anything that was not used as uniforms will be used for play clothes and church clothes.
A special thanks to Katy Martinez and Kelli Schumacher, Parents' Guild (PG) Used Uniform Sales Chairs, who led the project. In June, they took on the task of updating the used uniform inventory to include only approved uniforms as well as to reduce the surplus of various uniform items.
In addition, the PG uniform clean up drive provided over 10 boxes of sweatshirts and fleeces which were donated to St. Vincent dePauls', as the children in Nicaragua do not need cold weather items.
The Parents' Guild used profits from its Used Uniform Summer Sale to pay for shipping of the uniforms to Nicaragua.

 Expressing Gratitude this Thanksgiving
by EHS CommunicationsExpressing Gratitude this Thanksgiving
Lower School students had the opportunity to express their thankfulness to Episcopal's nutrition services and operations staff this Thanksgiving season.
Each cafeteria and operations employee was assigned to a lower school classroom. Employees visited their class and shared their roles and responsibilities on the school's campus. The students had the opportunity to ask questions and become acquainted with the employees on a more personal basis.
To express their appreciation of all that they do for our school, a photograph with their name and role of each employee was placed on the bulletin board, located just outside the lower school office, with a "we are thankful for our support staff" banner.
A special Thanksgiving Chapel service was held for the support staff employees. After Father Howe's celebratory message of thankfulness, Parents' Guild Lower School Representative, Denise Keaty presented each member of the support staff with a Wal-Mart gift card. Student representatives from each class then walked to the alter showing their thanks to their staff member with beautifully created cards of appreciation designed by the class. A "we appreciate you" cake was shared and enjoyed by the support staff members after the chapel service.
Episcopal High School is grateful to the Parents' Guild who sponsors and coordinates this event each year; their leadership has provided an avenue to share with our Lower School students the true meaning of Thanksgiving.
