Episcopal High School
of Baton Rouge, owned and operated by the Diocese of
the Episcopal Church of Louisiana, is the leading independent
school in Baton Rouge. Located on a beautiful 50-acre
campus in the southeastern section of the city, it was
established in 1965 as a challenging college preparatory
school. It now serves students in grades PK-12. The
low student/teacher ratio of 11:1 allows a relationship
between
student and teacher that recognizes the personal needs
and individual levels of achievement of its 1,034 students.
Episcopal is a member of the following organizations:
the National Association of Episcopal Schools, the National
Association of Independent Schools, the Southwestern
Association of Episcopal Schools, and the Southern Association
of Independent Schools.
Episcopal works within
the framework of a fully accredited college entrance
curriculum. The primary goal is to develop honest, alert,
intellectually curious, and academically disciplined
students. Instruction is traditional in that it demands
facts, principles, and methods, yet it is flexible in
that it considers each student’s capabilities and interests.
The school offers Advanced
Placement courses in the areas of English, social studies,
mathematics, science, languages, computer science, and
studio art. In addition, honors courses leading to the
AP courses are taught in grades 9-11 in many academic
disciplines.
Students may choose from
a wide range of electives such as creative writing, communications
design, statistics, marine biology and computer science
II. Instruction is
offered in French and Spanish beginning in Kindergarten,
and Latin is added to the foreign language offerings
in fourth grade. There are opportunities for participation
in debate, drama, art, music, and journalism. The
school
also provides a full interscholastic program in football,
volleyball, basketball, track, cross country, soccer
and other sports.
A full-time college counselor
guides all students in making appropriate college selections,
and with the mean SAT and ACT scores well above regional
and national levels, Episcopal students are accepted
at such schools as Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke,
Emory, Harvard, Princeton, Rice, Rhodes, Southern Methodist,
Stanford, Texas Christian, Tulane, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest,
Washington & Lee, the Universities of North Carolina,
Pennsylvania and Virginia, and Yale.
Episcopal’s facilities
include the Visual and Performing Arts Center, the
Middle School building, a science building, the Lower
School and Greer Center for the Performing Arts, the
Kindergarten and Pre-K building, large classroom buildings,
a chapel, and a dining hall. The school also has computer
and writing
labs, as well as computers with Internet access in each
classroom. The main library was renovated in 1999 and
includes computer labs for class use. A second newly
renovated library serves Episcopal’s
Lower School students. Athletic facilities include two
gymnasiums,
a weight
room, a football
stadium,
soccer fields, a softball field, an all-weather track,
a heated swimming pool, five tennis courts, and a baseball
