Fifth Grade English
Syllabus
Course Description:
Episcopal Fifth graders continue building their strong foundations
in reading and writing. Students will read a variety of
literature including fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama.
The class will read four to six classic or award winning
works of fiction and will be engaged in a variety of activities
that build
comprehension and critical thinking as well as promote
life-long appreciation of reading. Additionally, students
will read independently and in small groups. Fifth graders
will write multi-paragraph essays in the four writing modes:
description, narration, exposition and persuasion, and
will apply process writing using the Six Traits of Writing
method. Students will practice proofreading and editing.
Students will strengthen their knowledge of grammar, spelling,
vocabulary, reading strategies, writing techniques and
elements of literature. Fifth graders will write a biweekly
letter about their self selected reading. True to the mission
of our school, students will be engaged in co-curricular
activities, both on a daily basis and through large themed
units.
Materials:
Pens, pencils, paper, assignment book, binder, class handouts,
self selected reading material.
Class Expectations:
Come prepared; Respect others, Follow School Rules, Read
daily, Follow
assignments.
Quizzes, Tests, Rubrics, Projects:
Have these signed by a parent.
Grading:
Students will be graded using written rubrics on class
assignments, projects, writing journals and class
notes, reading letters,
quizzes,tests, class participation and behavior.
