Welcome to Lower
School Latin!
General Information
About
the Program:
The primary aims of the Latin
program for fourth and fifth graders are to introduce students
to the language and culture of ancient Rome, and to expand students'
English vocabulary by giving them an awareness of Latin roots
in the English language. Through their study of Latin, students
gain a better understanding of the workings of language in general,
and find that the grammatical structures and terminology that
they learn are helpful to them in English and language arts
classes.
The course is taught using Minimus: Starting Out in Latin
(Cambridge), a text written specifically for elementary-age
students. Minimus focuses on the everyday life of a
real Roman family that lived at Vindolanda, a military outpost
in Roman Britain that is today an important archaeological site.
The text introduces students to Latin grammar and vocabulary
through colorful pictures and stories. Also, in reading about
the adventures of the family, students explore Roman history,
Greek and Roman mythology, and daily life and customs of the
Roman Empire. Typical classroom activities include oral drills,
reading and translation, Latin conversations, art projects,
writing exercises, games, and English vocabulary work.
The curriculum of Latin classes in the Foreign Language Department
of Episcopal High School of Baton Rouge is based on the National
Standards for Classical Language Learning.
In addition to the classroom activities, students also have
the option of participating in the Lower School Latin Club,
known as the Minimus
Club.
