The music program at Episcopal offers students, Pre-K-12, the opportunity to explore the historical, theoretical and emotional impact of music from cultures around the world.
Students in the lower school are immersed in the Kodály and Orff method, using sol-fege, a wide selection of Orff instruments and recorders to fully realize lessons demonstrated in the classroom. Classes are fun-filled and engaging, culminating in performances throughout the year. Fifth graders have the opportunity to join beginning band in preparation for the middle and upper school instrumental music experience.
Middle schoolers are offered a choice of either band or chorus for a nine week enrichment period. Students spend the majority of their time focusing on the basics of their chosen instrument. Both middle school band and chorus perform during the school year and are provided travel opportunities every other school year.
Upper school students can choose from a wide array of musical offerings, ranging from AP Music Theory to Concert Band and Concert Choir. The emphasis in the upper school program is college preparatory in nature, with literature choices for instrumental and choral ensembles chosen from college and university repertoire lists. Students experience, first-hand, the joys and challenges of the western music canon, exploring historical, philosophical and musical implications through performance and analysis. Both the instrumental and choral departments travel abroad on a 3-4 year rotation and perform locally for churches and community organizations in the Baton Rouge area. Concerts are performed regularly in accordance with class syllabi.
Students from all divisions are provided the benefit of private instruction in piano, guitar and instrumental music during the school day, if their schedule permits. Please contact Jason Hubbard or Paul Taranto for information regarding private lesson fees and scheduling.
