Episcopal Launches Knight School
Friday, September 9, 2005

Mission: The Knight School was created as a division of Episcopal High School, Baton Rouge, in order to provide core academic courses (English, mathematics, science, social studies, and foreign language) with daily chapel to students in grades 6 – 12 who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

Because the nature of the Knight School is distinct in purpose from the regular day program at Episcopal, students wishing to apply for permanent admission into the regular program for the academic year 2006-2007 must apply through the Admissions Office. Some spots for the 2005-2006 day program may become available; please contact Ruth Hill, Director of Admissions.

DESCRIPTION/LIMITATIONS OF THE KNIGHT SCHOOL

  • Hours of operation: Monday – Thursday 4:00 pm – 9:10 pm; Saturday (8:00 am – 1:15 pm).

  • Knight School students will earn credit towards receiving the Louisiana State Diploma and are not considered candidates for graduation from Episcopal High School.

  • While every reasonable effort will be made to match the student’s former core curriculum to the offerings of the Knight School (including on-line course work), some courses may not be possible. In addition, texts and curriculum sequence may differ from the student’s school of origin.

  • No elective courses can be offered.

  • No extra-curricular opportunities exist.

  • A full time division head will administer the program.

  • All teachers will have background checks performed and have undergone an interview process. Teaching credentials and transcripts cannot be verified under these special circumstances.

  • A counselor, an Episcopal priest, and a librarian will support the program.

  • No college counseling can be offered. A list of private counselors in the Baton Rouge area will be provided.

  • Students are required to remain on campus during the posted hours of the program.

  • School holidays will be congruent with the Episcopal High School calendar. All missed Saturday classes will be rescheduled.

  • Standardized testing will be administered as appropriate.

  • Classes and teachers will be reassigned as the population pool changes.

  • Cafeteria services will not be offered. A snack break will be scheduled. Snacks must be brought from home.

  • A dress code will be published (no uniforms required).

  • The Knight School has been designed to be as flexible as possible in response to the disruption of educational services caused by Hurricane Katrina. Episcopal High School recognizes that both students and teachers from the New Orleans area will be returning to their homes and that this return will be in stages.

  • Tuition is by term; not by year. We ask that parents/guardians give Episcopal High School one month’s notice if they plan to withdraw their child before the end of the academic year 2005-2006.

  • Tuition for term one: $2,000 due upon enrollment

  • Tuition for term two: $2,000 due January 1, 2006

  • For more information contact: (225)753-3180 extension 1135.
